How to Get Leads From Your Website: A Practical Checklist for Small Businesses

GrowthStack Digital ·

A website that gets visitors but no enquiries is like a shop with people walking past the window and nobody coming in. The good news is that most of the reasons visitors leave without contacting you are fixable.

Here is a practical checklist for small businesses that want more leads from their website. Most of it applies whether you use GrowthStack or not.

1. Make it obvious what you do and where

Within a few seconds of landing on your site, a visitor should know what you do and which areas you serve. A headline like "Plumber in Paarl and Wellington" is far more useful than "Welcome to our website". List your service areas clearly, ideally on every page.

2. Put contact options where thumbs can reach them

Most visitors are on a phone. Make your call button, and WhatsApp if you use it, easy to tap, and keep them visible as people scroll. Don't hide your number at the bottom of a long page.

Offer more than one way to get in touch. Some customers want to call immediately, others prefer a quick message or a short form they can fill in after hours.

3. Give each main service its own page

A separate page for each main service lets you answer specific questions and gives Google a clearer picture of what you offer. Someone searching for a specific job is more likely to enquire when they land on a page about exactly that.

4. Keep forms short

Every extra field on a form loses some people. For a first enquiry, you usually only need a name, a phone number or email address, and a short description of what they need. You can ask the rest when you follow up.

5. Answer questions after hours

Many people browse in the evening or on weekends, when you're not answering the phone. A chat assistant can answer common questions and take their details so the enquiry isn't lost. We cover how to do this well in website with a chatbot for small business.

6. Make the site fast

Slow pages lose visitors, especially on mobile data. Use properly sized images, avoid unnecessary add-ons and choose hosting that's reliable. Speed also helps you show up on Google.

7. Show real proof, honestly

Photos of your actual work, genuine reviews and clear details about who you are build trust. Never make up testimonials or numbers. Customers can usually tell, and it damages trust far more than having no reviews at all.

8. Capture every enquiry in one place

Leads are easily lost when they arrive by phone, email, form and chat with no single record. A CRM brings them together so you can see who asked, what they asked for and whether you've replied. This is one of the main features of a smart website.

9. Follow up quickly

The fastest response often wins the job. Set aside time each day to go through new enquiries and reply. Even a short message saying you've received their request and when you'll call goes a long way.

10. Keep your website up to date

Old phone numbers, discontinued services and outdated hours quietly cost you work. Review your site regularly, or use a service that keeps it updated for you.

Mistakes that quietly cost you leads

Some problems are easy to miss because nobody complains about them; visitors simply leave. Watch out for contact forms that don't actually deliver to anyone, phone numbers displayed as images that can't be tapped, pages that take a long time to load on mobile data and pop-ups that cover the screen before the visitor has read anything.

Test your own website regularly on your phone. Try to find your number, request a quote and check that the enquiry actually reaches you. Ask a friend to do the same and tell you where they got stuck. It's one of the simplest and most useful checks you can do.

Also be wary of generic wording. "Quality service at affordable prices" tells a visitor nothing. Specific details, such as the services you offer, the areas you cover and your working hours, are far more convincing and help people decide to contact you.
